An Analog or analogue signal is any continuous signal for which the time varying feature (variable) of the signal is a representation of some other time varying quantity, i.e., analogous to another time varying signal. It differs from a digital signal in terms of small fluctuations in the signal which are meaningful. Analog is usually thought of in an electrical context; however, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and other systems may also convey analog signals. An analog signal uses some property of the medium to convey the signal's information. For example, an aneroid barometer uses rotary position as the signal to convey pressure information. Electrically, the property most commonly used is voltage followed closely by frequency, current, and charge. Any information may be conveyed by an analog signal; often such a signal is a measured response to changes in physical phenomena, such as sound, light, temperature, position, or pressure, and is achieved using a transducer. For example, in sound recording, fluctuations in air pressure (that is to say, sound) strike the diaphragm of a microphone which induces corresponding fluctuations in the current produced by a coil in an electromagnetic microphone, or the voltage produced by a condensor microphone. The voltage or the current is said to be an "analog" of the sound. An analog signal has a theoretically infinite resolution. In practice an analog signal is subject to noise and a finite slew rate. Therefore, both analog and digital systems are subject to limitations in resolution and bandwidth. As analog systems become more complex, effects such as non-linearity and noise ultimately degrade analog resolution to such an extent that the performance of digital systems may surpass it. Similarly, as digital systems become more complex, errors can occur in the digital data stream. A comparable performing digital system is more complex and requires more bandwidth than its analog counterpart. In analog systems, it is difficult to detect when such degradation occurs. However, in digital systems, degradation can not only be detected but corrected as well. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License When was the first analog television signal introduced? Q. I heard that broadcasting using analog signals for television started since 1948. Is that the year that the analog was introduced? Or earlier than that? Asked by caltam84 - Mon Jul 13 00:25:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments Analog signal to digital via integrated circuit? Q. So I have an accelerometer which outputs an analog signal representing acceleration in the X, Y, and Z directions. How would I go about translating the analog signal into a digital signal for a computer to read in the data? Are there any recommendations for integrated circuits that can perform this task? I do not know a clock rate for the system, but I would like to have it be as fast as possible. PS. I do not have an analog port available :(. Asked by Jeff L - Sun Jul 20 19:30:56 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know how much this helps, but VTI Technologies makes accelerometers that will output in serial data. You can buy these for around 30 bucks from digikey. At the very least you can check out their block diagrams to get an idea of some components you might need to interface your accelerometer. If you are crafty you can check out the specs on their product and use that as a baseline for the yet to be determined parts you are going to choose. Sometimes you can search digikey and come up with a specialized integrated circuit that does exactly what you need. That might be worth a try also. Q. I have an I/O card that delivers a 0 - 5 volt signal but I need to control a unit looking for a 0 - -10 volt signal. I would prefer if the conversion was linear, but that is not necessary. Is there any sort of chip or circuit that can be used to do this? Asked by dave d - Wed Jan 7 09:01:53 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. an inverting opamp will do this fine. assuming you mean 0 to +5v and 0 to 10v you need 15 or 12 volts supplies, any good general use opamp, a 5k and a 10k resistor. edit, given the range of voltages, you could operate the opamp on +5 and 12 volt supplies. .
