A magneto is an electrical generator that uses permanent magnets to produce alternating current. Hand-cranked magneto generators were used to provide ringing current in early telephone systems. Magnetos adapted to produce pulses of high voltage are used in the ignition systems of some gasoline-powered internal combustion engines to provide power to the spark plugs. The magneto is now confined mainly to engines where there is no available electrical supply, for example in lawnmowers and chainsaws. It is also universally used in aviation piston engines even though an electrical supply is usually available. This is because a magneto ignition system is more reliable than a battery-coil system. People discussing magnetos and coils used in early internal-combustion engines generally used the term "tension" instead of the more modern term "voltage." From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I remove that magneto cover (I think it's a flywheel) on my ATV? Q. I bought a china ATV about 2 months ago and I have been needing to replace the magneto (electrical) and I don't have the right tool (nor do I even know what to use) to get this off. Any help would be extremely appreciated. I've Worked for over a year for this quad and I need help. :( Asked by Taylor B - Thu Aug 14 23:02:01 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Okay I used this method when I worked at a lawn mower repair place and we didn't have the right puller to do it right. Loosen up the nut and screw it up to where it's even with the threaded shaft. Figure out a way to put pressure on the magneto itself with levers but be careful you don't break or bend anything else. You just need some continuous pressure upwards. Take a dead blow hammer and stride the bolt head sharply. No deadhead hammer then use a piece of wood against the nut and strike the wood with a regular hammer while keeping pressure on the magneto. when it "pops up" the nut still on the shaft will keep it from dropping off too quickly. It's not the force but the sharp impact with upward pressure on the magneto that… [cont.] Answered by RoyG - Thu Aug 14 23:13:24 2008 magneto ignition system is made up of 2 electrical circuits what are they? Q. magneto ignition system is made up of 2 electrical circuits what are they? Asked by thomas w - Wed May 31 23:02:01 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. magnet and coil A magneto provides pulses of electrical power to the spark plugs in some petrol-powered internal combustion engines where batteries are not available, most commonly those in 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines used in small motorcycles, lawnmowers and chainsaws, as well as in most small aircraft and some racing automobiles, serving a similar function to the coil-type ignition system found in automobiles. In aircraft, typically each cylinder has two spark plugs, each driven from a separate magneto. This arrangement provides redundancy in the event of a failure of one of the magnetos, and two sparks burn more efficiently than one. Magnetos combine the functions of a dynamo, contact breaker points and coil into one unit. The engine… [cont.] Answered by R1volta - Wed May 31 23:09:30 2006 1982 Yamaha xt200j?
Q. My 82 Yamaha xt200j has an electrical system problem that I can't seem to find the answer to. When the left, or right blinker is turned on, the taillight flashes just enough to be noticed. It doesn't cut out, it just dims in sequence with the flashers. I have checked every ground on this motorcycle and every connection appears to match the schematic drawing , and is clean. I need these blinkers to pass NY State inspection ( not sure if it will ). All other problems are now resolved thanks to the help "Yahoo Folks" have given me. Battery is new and is charging with the magneto, switches seem good. This situtation happens with or without the motorcycle running. I doubt this is "Normal" or acceptable with the local authorities. Why does this… [cont.] Asked by kevusaborn - Wed Jun 25 20:31:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. add another ground wire or clean the ground connections should fix it Answered by racemaster - Wed Jun 25 21:01:58 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Magneto (electrical)" Lambretta Li125 150 Series III 4 pole Magneto jpg
