Radio is the transmission of signals by modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below those of visible light. Electromagnetic radiation travels by means of oscillating electromagnetic fields that pass through the air and the vacuum of space. Information is carried by systematically changing (modulating) some property of the radiated waves, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase. When radio waves pass an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. This can be detected and transformed into sound or other signals that carry information.

What type of in-house radios gets the best reception?
Q. Grundigs are the only ones that work in my house. Regular radios only get two or three stations. I get great reception from my car in the driveway.

A. It's not the radio its the antenna. Grundig radios have a good antenna. Many of the new digital "walkman" type radios that clip to your belt have decent antennas. The problem with most portable radios is the manufacturers overlook the antenna and just add a cheap piece of wire so you can't pick up more than a couple channels.

I'm looking for a portable radio with good reception. Are digital display radios the same as digitally tuned?
Q. Some radios spec digital display while others spec digital tuned (which obviously have a digital display also). Can a radio be analog tuned with a digital display? Also, do digital radios have better reception than analog?

A. portable radios with digital display may still be analog tuned. this is common in the shortwave band sets. in channelized communications, like the AM and FM broadcast bands, digital tuning is faster and more accurate than analog. this is because stations are on discrete steps to begin with. however for general coverage and ham bands, stations are scattered on any oddball frequency so tuning with digital can take more time to scan and must use finer steps (100 hz per step oppossed to 200 khz per step in the FM band). by nature, once tuned in, digital is more stable than most analog oscillators. some digital tuning systems create more phase noise and potential for birdies than high class analog, but otherwise performance is similar. digital… [cont.]
