What relationship exists between stars and energy?
Q. I am trying to study for a test, and I cannot seem to find this in any of my notes or my textbook. Your help would be much apreciated! What relationship exists between stars and energy?
Asked by Lori - Mon Jan 5 21:03:22 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Damn!! I just love this forum Stars are machines for turning mass into energy through a process called 'fusion'. As the star fuses hydrogen into helium, it releases a big bunch of energy because one atom of helium doesn't weigh quite as much as two atoms of hydrogen. The difference is given off as energy in the form of heat and electromagnetic radiation (light, infra-red, ultra-violet, and microwaves). Doug

Is itpossible something exists that isn t the result strictly ofnatural processes? How would u know any better?
Q. Two questions for evolutionists: 1) Is it possible that something exists--love, consciousness, soul, life, whatever--that isn t the result strictly of natural processes and matter in motion? Something that doesn't reduce to naturalistic explanations? 2) If such phenomena exist, how would you know any better? That is, how could science detect it?
Asked by Amy - Thu Jan 29 01:16:31 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. love, life, consciousness - all reducible to biochemistry. The 'soul', or 'spirit' and other such metaphysical ideas do not fall under the remit of science. They are 'non-falsifiable', and cannot be tested or proven true or proven false, according to Karl Popper's definition of the philosophy of science. This means it is possible to be a scientist AND hold religious beliefs, as long as you can use the creation story as a metaphor.

How do we know reality exists before it is discovered?
Q. Was gravity invented or discovered? If you say discovered, how do we know it was pre-existing. And is it possible to be sure it even exists at all. It can be proved pragmatically, in that it works. But what if we were wrong, there was something completely different causing the concept to "work"?

How do existentialists justify the belief that free will even exists?
Q. Philosophers like Sartre use human freedom as the fundamental basis for their ideas. But how do we know that it even exists? How do we know that actions are not merely the results of causes? Furthermore, how do they deal with developments in cognitive science that question the existence of a Self that is in full control of one's thoughts and actions? I am inquiring about the existentialist position, rather than the question of free will in general.

A. In my view, it is more probable that our free will is merely an illusion to gratify our ego and is only an unexplored part of the grand system of cause and effect that is ruling this Universe... we may be feeling the existence of free will only because of either our blind faith in God or due to our bloated ego... that there is such an inviolable state of uncertainty all over, is another fact that negates any existence of free will. I think it may be the same story as miracle, where just because we can not establish any acceptable cause and effect relationship, we claim that miracles can happen. Miracles as well as freewill may merely be our ignorant or arrogant beliefs devoid of reality. I would really be shocked if ever they are proved… [cont.]

What are the formulas of these two compounds? What type of bonding exists in each?
Q. When magnesium metal is burned in air, two different products are made. One is magnesium oxide and the other is magnesium nitride. What are the formulas of these two compounds? What type of bonding exists in each.
Asked by justanordinaryday08 - Sun Sep 24 15:15:43 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Using a very fine magnesium wire, the reaction temperature is not very hot and almost all of the magnesium will react with the oxygen. If a ribbon of magnesium metal is burned, the temperature is hotter. Now two reactions are possible. The majority of the magnesium reacts with the oxygen: 2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO A small amount of magnesium will react with the nitrogen in the air to give th nitride: 3Mg + N2--> Mg3N2 Both the oxide and the nitride seem to be ionic in nature. Both react with the water vapor in the air.

Q. I have been in many situations where I perceived racism but the white people deny it exists. It's always the same with whites. They claim that we are crying racism. That we are too sensitive. They cannot seem to comprehend that racism still exists today. Is this in itself racism or just ignorance on the part of white?
Asked by mfh - Sat Nov 29 16:26:38 2008 - - 16 Answers - 2 Comments

A. This may sound confusing but even when there is no racism present, the fact that a minority person may suspect racism or be paranoid about racism, is a result of years of systematic racism. So even when something is not racist, the legacy of racism continues. And the fact that you may feel racism when there is none present is actually a result of racism. Get it!?!?

Asked by Cool guy - Wed Nov 12 02:04:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Detailed explanation "F distribution": four step procedure 1. compute test Statistic F "F-ratio" from ANOVA 2. LOOK-Up table of Test Statistic F at (n , k) degrees of freedom showing the "Pvalue" area under the curve 3. LOOK-Up table of "alpha-level" showing the f critical value for same (n , k) degrees of freedom. 4. "Pvalue" is compared to "alpha-level" and conclusion made. If "Pvalue" less than or equal to "alpha-level": null hypothesis is rejected. If "Pvalue greater than "alpha-level": fail to reject null hypothesis.

What evidence exists for the intelligent design theory (creationism)?
Q. I am wondering what evidence actually exists for the theory of intelligent design or creationism depending on what you call it. I am pretty set on believing evolution as the correct theory but as an open-minded person would like to know if there is any really credible evidence supporting intelligent design. Note: I put this question into the Philosophy section because it seems the best fit for a part religious, part scientific question.

A. So many people these days are confusing biblical creationism with intelligent design. "Intelligent Design is the study of patterns in nature that are best explained as the result of intelligence" (Dr. William Dembski). That's it; it says nothing of who the creator is and how he/she/it/they did it. Intelligent Design encompasses every "creation" story, even aliens seeding life on this planet. As Dr. Stephen Meyer has said, I think that the key thing that many folks in the media and many people in the general public miss, and I think this has been a somewhat unhelpful aspect of the debate, is that they have confused the idea of evidence with the idea of implication. The evidence for design is as I said this nanotechnology that we re… [cont.]

A. as you are talking about charges i think that your are talking about a metal and iodine so, as the metal would give away 1 electron it would have a +1 charge and iodine would have -1 charge and the overall charge of the compound would be 0.

How might I be convinced that god exists?
Q. A meaningful answer should take into consideration the following: 1. The Bible does not prove that god exists any more than the Necronomicon proves that Yog-Sothoth exists. Citing the Bible as proof for god's existence is therefore unhelpful. 2. Your personal experiences have no meaning to me. Descriptions of your relationship with god are inherently unconvincing, given my own observations on the subject. My position is that there is likely no god. How might I be convinced otherwise?

A. This question has been worked over by theologians and philosophers for millenia. There are various standard arguments that some people find convincing I don't find any of them convincing. There are ways, however, that I could be convinced, if there were a god and he wanted to convince me of his existence. The resurrected Jesus appeared to hundreds. If he appeared to me, I would be convinced.

What are the chances that God & Heaven really exists according to Catholic teaching?
Q. I'm Catholic but sometimes it sounds so far-fetched that a Christian God really exists with all the suffering and evil going on in the world. What are the chances that our souls will actually go to a place called Heaven?
Asked by . - Fri May 22 00:06:17 2009 - - 19 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I just had this discussion with my mom, who has recently become atheist. I believe that human free will causes the majority of suffering in the world. I believe that even in cases of natural disaster, it was human's choice to park his trailer in tornado alley or build so close to the beach. So, I do not think suffering is a punishment from God, but a result of free will. Someone chose to drink and drive, someone chose to smoke cigarettes, etc. I do believe that there is eternal life waiting for the believers.

It is impossible at our current technological and knowledge level to determine if god exists. Anyone agree?
Q. There universe is to huge and we know very little about it. We still have many unanswered questions about our own solar system. So why would anyone decide that they know god exists or doesn't exists. The bible was written when humans knew even less then they know now. Its ridiculous to say you know god exists because you read it in a book or your family told you thing. All religion, atheism, or whatever is impossible to prove correct. The only logical thing to believe is to admit anything could be possible and there is no certaintys.

It take about 1/10 of a second. but when i start without debugging, my executed program just pauses there and i can see my program running. what might be the problem?

A. I only use visual studio for c#, so I am going to talk about my experience with it there and hope it transfers to c++. When I debug my program in VS, when there is a error in my code, the screen focuses back to the code and it shows me where in the code the error came up. If you make a brand new project with VS, before you do anything, try to run it. Do you still get the same thing? If so, it then sounds like a bug with your install, if not, it sounds like a bug in your code.

If the table DOES exist, then I want the code to then insert values into the table. If the table does not exist, then the table should be created, and then the values entered. I am encountering a lot of trouble trying to do this...would be very grateful for some assistance.
