How can I kill aspen rhizomes or prevent them from sprouting in my yard?
Q. I rent and have a beeeutiful lawn and the people who own this have no idea what a pain it is to have these little trees sprouting up every where. There are probably 8 aspens around the house. If they were mine to remove I'd girdle every single one.

A. You can't kill them but you will have to manually cut them. Yes it is a lot of work but its the only way. Here is a link that may help with aspen control.

When sprouting beans, is it best just to eat the sprouts, or is the remaining bean nutritious too?
Q. I've just started using a home-sprouter. It seems that mung beans are OK to eat with the sprouts (what about the seed-pods though - best to pick out and discard or are they healthy too?) What about other sprouts? Lentils? Fenugreek? OK to eat the bean the sprouts emerge from? Any beans that must be discarded after sprouting?

A. Sprouting information you can purchase a sprouting jar (available at most health food stores) or you can make your own. To make your own get a 1/2 gallon clear glass container. Be sure to wash it out well. Cover the mouth with a fine screen and use a rubber band to keep it on. That's it. Really though, the purchased jars are inexpensive and are made just for the purpose. ** How to sprout seeds 1.) Place measured amount of seed, beans, or grain into sprouting jar. Add water and soak overnight following chart recommendations below. 2.) Pour off soak water and place jar mouth down at 45 degree angle for drainage and ventilation between rinsings, then rinse twice a day with fresh cool water. … [cont.]

Any ideas (besides picking them out) for killing the "plants" sprouting up in my lawn without killing grass?
Q. I'm having trouble with squirrels burying and planting stuff in my yard (someone keeps feeding them ears of corn and other stuff); the squirrels have been busy burying different things in my lawn all winter and the various plants are now sprouting up all over my lawn. Is there any pesticide that can be sprayed to kill these plants without harming the grass? Any other ideas? The are literally hundreds of sprouts and plucking them by hand will take forever and probably still not work totally.

A. There is, look for something that acts only on dicotyledons and not on monocotyledons and you will likely get rid of all non-grass greenery in your yard. The terms derive from the germination of the plants seed. Monocotyledons will only have a single cotyledons (starter leaf) where as dicotyledons will have two of those starter leaves. Because all grasses are technically monocotyledons, if you manage to find a good weed killer that targets only dicotyledons you'll be fine.

The seeds in my lemons are sprouting. They are still okay to eat, right?
Q. While cutting up lemons I noticed that many of the seeds are sprouting. I am using them for lemonaide anyway, and am assuming that they are fine. What if I want to plant them? Any advice?
Asked by alcachofita - Sat Jul 28 22:20:58 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should be able to use the lemons with no problem; presumably, you weren't planning on using the seeds anyway. I would imagine if you plant the seeds in an appropriate soil, you'd get the beginnings of a lemon tree. Go for it! You never know until you try! :-)

How long does it take a Canna to start sprouting?
Q. I've had my Canna in the ground for about 2 maybe 3 weeks now and i do not see anything sprouting out? does it take long for them to start? last year my canna didn't flower but the folage looked pretty healthy. just wondering if i should replace it or do i need to wait a bit more for it to sprout. its the one with dark brown yellowish leaves... thanks
Asked by Daylilly - Tue May 26 12:16:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Canna dont like being moved and prefer being left alone. It will appear with time. Dont disturb it. They tend not to flower if the soil is too rich. Stop feeding the other ones and more flowers will come. Or as a last resort lift them and put them in pots and plunge them and remember to water them. They get root bound and flower like mad. Kevin

A. Heath food or organic market. Beans of various types including mung, rye, wheat, oats. All found in the bulk food section. The alfalfa I'm not sure. You might ask the store manager. Of course with sprouting you have to be careful to wash them at least once a day and when they get to eating size, get them under refrigeration. Too many spoiled sprouts causing problems...you don't need that.

Why are these cut down tree stumps sprouting?
Q. We had a wild Willow tree growing in our yard. it was becoming a messy nuisence so we cut it down in January. We stacked the logs along the fence on the opposite side of the yard so they could dry out to sell for firewood. Now, those logs are sprouting! Its really creeping me out. I took botany in college and, I dont remember reading anything about this! Why are they still growing and how can we stop the sprouts?!

A. This is normal for willows. If there is any moisture around they will start to grow!!You will have to get rid of all the wood, inc cutting the stump out.Willow is not a good fire wood!!

How does a sprouting seed, in the dark ground, know which way to send the roots?
Q. If gravity has anything to do with it, what have experiments with the absence of gravity in space shown?
Asked by G.O. - Tue May 2 02:31:27 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Plant growth responses are called tropisms. Roots are positively geotropic - grow in the direction of a gravitational pull. Roots are positively hydrotropic - grow towards water. So both of these tropisms stimulate roots to grow down into soil. In the absence of any strong stimuli roots will grow straight in whatever direction growth began. Have a look here:

I've planted an old sprouting onion in the dirt and it's growing great. How do I know when it's ready to pick?
Q. I've heard you have to dry them after picking or they rot. What's the process to growing your own onions?
Asked by chris w - Sun Oct 14 10:08:35 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. that onion will produce flowers and seeds... past the bulbing/eating stage... sorry, but they are beautiful flowers buy some onion sets, plant them during the proper growing season in your area after planted and growing, you can pick and use any time.. and even the tender green tops.. like chives yes, you do have to dry them if you want to store them for more than a week.. to prevent fungus/rot... but you can use\eat them during any part of the time... drying is only because if you try to store a bunch of them for a long time, they're too moist, they'll rot... just like potatoes, yams, etc.

How can I stop the maple tree's from sprouting out of the thousands of helicopters that fell on my lawn?
Q. My lawn is awesome but with so much rain I haven't been able to mow as frequently as I would like. The moist ground is enabling the helicopters to sprout like crazy. Is there any granular weed killer that will kill them? I have a vegetable garden that I don't want to hurt with weed killers. I am ready for my second fertilizer application of the year. Will Scott's turf buider + weed control kill the little maple demons? All advice is welcome.
Asked by Derek C - Mon May 26 14:59:06 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. / Weed killer will not kill the tree sprouts, but mowing them will. Just mow over the sprout, and it is a small twig that shrivels and dies (like cutting a tree at the trunk - without the shrivelling.

How can I keep potatoes longer from sprouting?
Q. Every year I grow potatoes in my garden. I store them in my basement but by spring they start to sprot. I don't mine the ones I'm going to use as seed potatoes to sprot. But the ones I keep for eating I don't want them to sprot. If they don't sprot they will last longer. The potatoes you buy in the stores don't sprot too fast. What can I do?Do you spray them with some kind of cemical or some thing. I hear that you can put apples with them and they will not sprot.I don't want my eating potatoes to sport because they become soft and after so long they turn black inside. The ones that had turned green are the ones exposed to the sun. They were not covered with enough dirt. I know that the green part is poisonous but you would have to… [cont.]

A. Keep in a cool, dry dark place. And don't eat if they're turning green! That part is poisonous (solanine).

A. Cannas like a lot of moisture and some varieties will even thrive in swampy or submerged conditions. If kept damp, they should sprout when the ground warms up. Be patient. When they finally sprout, they will grow like crazy. They are one of my favorite plants. Good gardening this season!

What large,shade-loving,purple -flower sprouting plant is this?
Q. I see this plant commonly here in northeast Florida. It's leaves are long and pointy like an Oleander tree's. The flowers bud in elongated buds like a bug's antennaes and when they bloom, which is frequently, they are purple with five round petals. The entire plant isn't cramped together, it's very spacey and long, if that makes any sense. I love this plant, which has taken over the entire back wall of my house, but I can't figure out at all what it is. Any suggestions?
Asked by Minerva - Fri Oct 10 19:24:23 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think it's a type of Ruellia. All your criteria fit--the leaves are pointy, the buds do look like a bug's antennae and the flowers are purple (although they also come in pink and white) with five petals. Plus, saying that they have taken over your space makes me feel that this is the correct answer. Ruellias grow like weeds and if you aren't careful, you will have them growing all over the place! Good luck and I hope this information helps.

A. a sprouter with 3 separate jars is best. You rinse each one separately and then transfer to the next level. You do need to keep the sprouter in a warm area for the best germination.
