How does built-in wireless connection work in a laptop?
Q. I understand that I can get wireless internet connection if my laptop has a built-in wireless card for as long as I'm in a "hotspot" where I get connection from radio waves. How true is that? I am planning to get a laptop, but I'm not sure if where we live now is actually a "hotspot" or not where I could use it for regular web surfing? We do have broadband internet for our desktop now, but I don't want to have a wireless router connected to that as it is connected to my work/company's computer, I trust wired network better for that. If there is a DSL or Cable internet provider in our area, will that give a big possibility that I will be able to get good signal for the laptop's wireless internet connection? Where do built-in wireless cards… [cont.]

A. It is true you can connect to the Internet with radio waves. Hotspot however is a term used for an actual company. Hotspot cost money to use. You can pay monthly or pay-as-you go. Once you have an account with them you can use their Internet at Starbucks, airports and other various places (where Hotspot is offered). Now besides hot spot there are other ways you can connect via wireless. The easiest way is with a router. You already said you don't want to use a wireless router, but actually you can connect any computer to the router via "wired" or "wireless". Almost all routers have 4 ports for Ethernet and x amount for wired connections. If you connect a computer through the wired ports it would be just as secured as a computer… [cont.]

How can I setup my wireless router as a wireless access point?
Q. I see a lot of different ways to setup a wireless router as a wireless access point (to another router). I have a U-Verse router and a netgear wireless router, is there anyway I can use the netgear router to pickup the wireless signal from the U-verse, and let me connect to the netgear router to receive internet? LilJon, I apprieciate your help, but you obviously have no idea what your talking about. The other response guy, I will check that out.

Can I used a wireless router to connect to another wireless router in my house?
Q. My dad just replaced our wireless router at home cause it was getting old. Now it's laying around, with absolutely no use. But i'd like to play xbox live in my room, which is on the other side of my house, without buying a wireless game adapter for it. Can I use my old router to connect to my current one? I basically want to use it as a wireless receiver, but I assume it was made to send the connection, not to receive it. Can I still use it for this purpose?

A. some printers can be hooked straight into your router via ethernet cable, if yours can (you would be able to tell by it having a jack on the back of it that looks like a big phone jack), just plug it into your router and you should be able to access it from any computer on the network. if your printer doesnt have that then you would have to do a few more steps, first set your priinter up to your main desktop computer. once it is set up go to your printer settings and right click the f380 and go to properties. click the sharing tab and select the box that says share over network. after this is done you should be able to access it from any other computer on your network. good luck

A. there are two solutions for you. 1. use a pin to reset your router back to factory setting and reconfigure it. 2. get a linux LiveCD Distro such as Puppy Linux ( approx. 128MB), download it, burn it to a cd-r, reboot the compuer, load into Puppy, mount the Harddrives/partitions, locate the file with your wireless info.

A. The other desktop if its not connected wirelessly they its easy. Just install the drivers for the printer on the desktop thats ethernet cabled to the router. Once installed go to start /settings then printers then on the printer in question right click it and go to sharing and share this printer on the network. But right click my computer/properties then computer name or the like and make sure all computers on the network share the same workgroup . By default MS windows uses the same name. But you can change it to any name you want to. All computers have to have the same workgroup name to share files and printers. Then on the other computer connected wirelessly go to start/settings printers and install new printer and it will ask if its a… [cont.]

How can i connect my wireless laptop with a wired computer?
Q. Asked by fernandes_476 - Sun Oct 5 04:19:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would not recommend doing this; Internet connection sharing turns the host computer into a router. The wireless link between the vista and the access point will become a bottleneck. However, since it is your desire to do it, the instructions to setup internet connection sharing in vista and xp hosts are provided by the weblinks listed below. I think that windows XP and Vista will only allow sharing through a wired internet connection on the host computer. If this is true, another way to accomplish what you want will require a network bridge and an ethernet crossover cable connecting the vista computer (C1) with the wired com (C2). Note that the crossover cable has modified wiring, when compared to the standard cable that connects a… [cont.]

How can I establish my wireless network on a second computer at home?
Q. I have a new computer (Vista) set up on a wireless network (Netgear router) and it is working perfectly. Am trying to set up my second computer (XP and a wireless adapter) but it isn't recognizing any available wireless network. Should I contact my ISP or is there an understandable sequence of steps I should take to establish my wireless network on the second computer?
Asked by mustwinnow2004 - Mon Feb 16 15:04:08 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Use the XP network wizard. The two computers must belong to the same workgroup, so you need to set up the second computer with the same workgroup name. Then turn your attention to the wireless connection for which you need to know the name of the network and the password (these are not the same as the router user name and password unless you set them to be the same). Email me if you are still stuck.

What wireless cards are compatible with my Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook?
Q. The wireless card it comes with is terrible and I bought a new one but it didn't fit in the slot. I need to find out which wireless cards will work.
Asked by Drew - Mon Jan 5 00:24:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am not sure what card your system came with, but there are a few choices from Dell, and probably other cards that should work as well. The Wireless card in your system is a Mini-Card, which is based on PCI Express technology. Here is a list of cards directly from Dell that will work with your system: Please note, on this page you will also see Mobile Broadband Cards. Wireless Drivers as well as other Drivers for your system can be found here: Before downloading any drivers on this page you will need to select the Operating System that you are using. The Service Manual for replacing the Wireless Card in your system can be found here: I hope this helps.

When using wireless internet can my computer be seen by others?
Q. At times my wireless connection automatically connects to my neighbors when my signal is weak. Can the files on my computer be seen while using someone else connection. I know I can see all of my neighbors files on there computer when I use there connection. There wireless internet does not have a password so I think that's why I can see there stuff. Does anyone know?
Asked by Sezro - Mon Oct 5 18:46:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If they have some thing more than the standard router. like a bt home hub for example it is a mini computer storing usage logs etc it may even have a wireless light giveing the game away. Then yes. You are using a laptop that is set to connect to an available network i would set it only to connect to your network (network profile). see manage wireless net works in control panel. As for your question if you turn off network discovery no one can see you. And if you turn off file sharing (your neighbours have this on) then they will never be able to access your files. Just right click your network icon (bottom right) select network and sharing centre, to see your settings.

A. Setting up a secure wireless network (you'll want it secure if you do any online shopping, banking etc) can be a little tricky. I would suggest reading the manual that comes with your modem, it should tell you how to do it. Once the network is set up, connecting with your laptop should be pretty straightforward.
